For all the great riding that exists in Southern Arizona, there are surprisingly few multi-day events that make use of the dirt roads and public lands that abound outside Tucson. Over the last couple of years, we’ve put together routes that showcase the beauty of the Sonoran Desert and the grasslands of the Borderland region, starting and ending at Presta Coffee Roasters on 9th Street.

Early March is prime desert riding. Brittlebush and ocotillo should be in bloom. Temperatures range from the 40s to 70s Fahrenheit (5-20 Celsius). With some luck, there may even be natural flowing water on the southern stretches of the route. With bad luck, there’ll be too much, and you’ll deal with show-stopping mud.

This is a free event and is modeled on the principles of self-supported racing:
-Complete every mile of the route under your own power.
-Be completely self-supported (ie: no support crews, gear sharing, or planned outside help).
-Leave no trace.

For 2026, we’re offering two race distances – the original SAUER (317 miles) and the shorter SAUER-ita (136 miles).

Registration closes on February 22nd.
